The 1st Day Of March Madness: David Comes Out Swinging

Well, the 1st day of the NCAA brought enough madness for a lifetime as there were big leads blown and close games won. If the rest of the tournament proves to be like this, then this will be the most unpredictable tournament in years. In all this madness, David struck two thunderous blows to Goliath.

OVC powerhouse Moorehead State came into their game with Louisville expecting to win. Besides them, their fans and their coaches, no one believed they could topple the Cardinals. Well, the unbelievable happened. Behind hustle, determination, great rebounding of star power center Kenneth Faried, and a clutch 3 pointer by Demonte Harper, the Eagles shocked the world and beat the Cardinals. Who would have thought the Ohio Valley Conference would stand up to the Big East bully and knock them out?

Vandy had been a team that may people believed could cause some problems in the NCAA tournament. They had shooting from G John Jenkins, rebounding and toughness from Festus Ezeli and athleticism from ultra-talented F Jeff Taylor. Well, the Spiders proved they wanted to make a little noise themselves. The Spiders, led by Kevin Anderson’s 25 points, defeated the giant 69-66, striking another big blow for David.

The other big boys better start getting worried because this year, the field is more even than its ever been. Anyone can be beaten. David is more dangerous than ever now, so Goliaths like Duke, North Carolina and others have been served notice. The little guys aren’t taking it anymore. Welcome to March Madness!

While I enjoyed the upset of Slick Rick just as much as many, the “upset” of the Spiders really wasn’t all that significant except by improper seeds only. Richmond has been a stellar team all season off/def and went 13-3 and won the A10 tourney in one of the better midmajor conf. Vandy was a mediocre team in a horrible SEC conference. That being said, the higher seeds went a stellar 14-2 on the 1st day, one of the most lopsided results in tourney history. The only Cinderella here was the fat guy in the dress during the Utah St-K St game
