The Sprite Slam Dunk Contest is Saturday. The NBA is really pumping it up by using the star power of Blake Griffin. But if it wasn’t for Blake Griffin, would anyone be interested? I really don’t think anyone would be.
The Slam Dunk Contest was the best back in the day when Dominique Wilkins, Spud Webb, Larry Nance and Michael Jordan defied gravity. Anyone remember Jordan taking off from the free throw line? Anyone remember Spud Webb being the shortest person to ever win the dunk contest? In those days, there was so much creativity that could be expressed that no one had seen before.
These days, there’s only so many windmills, 360 or reverse dunks that can be seen before you get bored with watching the dunk contest. In my opinion, the dunk contest should be done after this year. Its purpose used to be to excite the fans with the aerial displays of the athletes, but to be honest, most fans hardly watch the contest anymore. The next phase of entertainment should be to just have the All-Star game. There’s no sizzle or substance to the dunk contest or any of the other contests to be honest. The Skills Challenge makes me yawn and the 3 point shooting contest really isn’t that interesting at all.
I ask all NBA fans this one question: What is your thoughts on the All-Star weekend? I personally wouldn’t mind if the NBA just had the game without the contests that go with it.
