Family First

Urban Meyer retired on Wednesday from coaching. He said he wanted to spend more time with his family and catch on things with his family. A lot of people already started to say that he is setting himself up to coach the Denver Broncos and reunite with QB Tim Tebow. Well, to those people saying that, you all must not understand the work behind coaching.

A lot of people think that coaching just involves the 2 to 2 1/2 hour practices, film study with the players and the games. What people don’t see is the endless preparation that goes into each game. In the preparation, you have to make sure you know your upcoming opponent as well as you can so you can win the game.

Coaches like Urban Meyer are relentless when it comes to preparation. He has been known to stay in the office all night studying, preparing and perfecting his knowledge of the opponent. His diligent work showed on the field as the Florida Gators won 2 National Championships in his tenure. But, behind all the success on the football field, Meyer was apparently still hurting.

What Meyer was hurting from was the constant missing of important things. Meyer missed his kids growing up. He admitted that it tugged at him that he couldn’t see his children be active in their activities and support them in their achievements. In the battle of work over family, work was winning. That very essence of success was taking over him.

Meyer, like a lot of coaches, want to be the best. Coaches work and work and work to make sure that they have done all they can to make their teams successful. And the cost of this is their families at times. I applaud Meyer for doing what a lot of coaches won’t do: choose their families over their professions.

Well I can’t say I fell sorry for him or any other big time coach, because they get paid in the millions. In life there are choices and he chose a very demanding but lucrative profession so you have to take the good with the bad.

I don’t think it was all family first,I think he was having health issues as well if I’m not mistaken it was something with the stress of it all causing heart problems.

    • I think that his health did play a part in some of his decision, but his family was the major part in his decision because he has a college-age daughter that plays volleyball at Georgia Tech that he never sees play. He has missed key moments in time that he can’t get back. He talked about the time he couldn’t get back with his family in his press conference. Now with all that being said, when his kids are through with college and activities, I can see him coming back. He left that door open at his press conference with how he answered the questions.
